Bogdan Drinkov sensei, 3rd dan.
Walthamstow Battodo with Bogdan Drinkov sensei 3rd dan, is a Japanese sword martial arts school in East London, where students train in Nakamura Ryu Battodo and Kurikara Ryu Hei Ho.
Batto’ means to draw and strike with the katana. ‘Do’ refers to a path of training aimed at the complete development of the practitioner.
Nakamura Ryu Battodo is a distillation of traditional Japanese Kenjutsu (sword fencing from the samurai era) developed by one of the most respected swordsmen of the 20th century.
Kurikara Ryu Heiho is a comprehensive system of external and internal training that breaks down the obstacles in mind and body that inhibit natural and spontaneous wielding of the sword.
Lineage: Bogdan Drikov studies directly under John Maki Evans sensei 7th dan, who in turn studied directly under the founder of Nakamura Ryu Battodo in Japan for many years.
“On the first day of training, sword and human meet as alien objects; over time they become one living thing. Eventually, the blade will magnify and project the actions of the body, reflect mood and mindset, and ultimately point the way to the core of being.”
John Maki Evans 7th dan

The Nakamura Ryu school of swordsmanship was founded in 1952 by Taizaburo Nakamura, one of the greatest swordsmen of the modern era, a combat veteran, instructor of close combat, kenjutsu and lifelong researcher of traditional Japanese swordsmanship from the Samurai era.

Nakamura Taizaburo Sensei demonstrating tameshigiri (test cutting).
He held high ranks in Kenjutsu, Kendo, Jūkendō, Tankendo, Japanese calligraphy as well as dan ranks in various other martial arts.
Like Miyamoto Musashi, he abhorred the artificial and impractical developments in many sword schools and sought to recreate a school of genuine combat swordsmanship.
